German shepherd dog training can be one of the most rewarding experiences, both for yourself and your dog. German shepherds are one of the most loyal, intelligent, and rewarding breeds out there. They can be a wonderful addition to your family.

German shepherd dog training is best done when they’re young. Trying to train a German shepherd from adulthood is not impossible, but many times more difficult. That said, German shepherds have the potential to become very well trained animals.

It’s important during and after German shepherd dog training that they get plenty of exercise to release their unruly personalities. A bored, under-exercised shepherd may resort to chewing furniture and clothing, while a well exercised shepherd will be much tamer.

One German shepherd dog training “trick" is to sprinkle cayenne pepper on areas where your shepherd tends to chew. This will instantly discourage the chewing once your dog takes a bite. This is a great “instant-fix," but it is still much more important to work out your dog’s energy than to try to fix his natural energy release through chewing.

It’s also important in German shepherd dog training that you train your dog to be groomed. Bathing and nails are both essential, especially with German shepherds, because they tend to shed. If your shepherd runs around the house without grooming, you may find yourself with dog fur all over the house.

Even with proper grooming, it’s a good idea to have a powerful vacuum cleaner to clean up the mess.

When you’re going through your German shepherd dog training, keep in mind that the most important thing is to build your relationship. Whether or not your dog sits when you tell him to “sit!" isn’t nearly as important as cultivating a kind, loving, communicating relationship. Do not yell or overly punish your dog, and don’t get impatient. Realize that aggressive behavior is usually your dog being territorial or afraid, and that “pooping" where he shouldn’t it just because he doesn’t understand the appropriate behavior.

German shepherd dog training is an important part of you and your dog’s relationship, but instead of it being like work, it can be one of the most fun aspects of your relationship.
